Williamsville, Athens, Pana lose in IHSA football quarterfinals
TOLONO — Top-seeded Tolono Unity scored 21 unanswered points, including 14 in the fourth period, and pulled away to beat No. 4 Williamsville 28-7 on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A football playoffs.
Tolono Unity (12-0) advanced to the semifinals and will face No. 2 Mount Carmel (12-0), which beat second seed Benton 30-14 in another quarterfinal game.
Williamsville, the defending Class 3A state champion from 2019, ended the season 10-2. The football playoffs were not played in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tolono Unity outgained Williamsville 158-72 on the ground. Senior quarterback Blake Kimball rushed for 91 yards on 22 attempts with two touchdowns for the Rockets. He added an additional 62 passing yards, completing 8 of 15 throws.

Williamsville standout running back Hunter Moser was held to 13 yards rushing on 16 attempts — and despite converting 3 of 5 fourth-down attempts — the Bullets went 0-for-10 on third downs.
Carrollton 28, Athens 26
At Carrollton, an attempted fourth-quarter comeback from Athens fell short and the Hawks defeated the Warriors in the Class 1A quarterfinals.
Carrollton (11-1), the No. 2 seed, will meet No. 9 Moweaqua Central A&M in the semifinals. The Raiders (9-3) beat No. 5 Arcola 21-19 in the quarterfinals.
Athens (10-2) trailed 28-14 with 11 minutes 45 seconds remaining in the fourth period. But the Warriors got an 8-yard TD run from Drew Cushman and the point after attempt failed to get Athens within 28-20 with 6:50 to go. A 12-yard fumble return for a TD by Connor Breazeale cut the Warriors' deficit to 28-26 at 3:16. The 2-point conversion try failed and Carrollton held on to advance.
Athens led 14-13 at the half when Breazeale had an 8-yard TD reception from Will Gordon. Jared Chandler also had a touchdown reception to give the Warriors the halftime lead. Carrollton answered and outscored Athens 15-0 to grab its 14-point lead.
Harley Angel led Carrollton with 165 yards rushing and a touchdown. Carrollton quarterback Grant Pohlman added 113 rushing yards to go with two touchdowns. Athens leading rusher Ja'Kyan Shanklin carried the ball 22 times and finished with 183 yards.
Nashville 43, Pana 19
Nashville quarterback Kolten Gajewski threw for 297 yards and two scores and the Hornets ousted Pana in the Class 2A quarterfinals.
Nashville (11-1), the sixth seed, advanced to the semifinals and will play No. 1 Decatur St. Teresa (12-0). The Bulldogs routed No. 4 Breese Mater Dei 48-14 in the quarterfinals.
Pana, seeded No. 2, finishes the season 11-1. Quarterback Max Lynch had 117 rushing yards, threw for 118 more and totaled two touchdowns for the Panthers.
