Each week, the Journal Star will take a look at the top performing teams and players from weekend games across the Peoria area.
We won't stop in the playoffs. Players from Pekin and Morton lead our list this weekend, which includes players from games on Friday and Saturday.
Kanye Tyler and Tanner Sprecher, Pekin
The Dragons rode their run game on a rainy night at Memorial Stadium. The duo rolled up 237 yards and a touchdown each on 52 carries to lead Pekin to a 28-14 win over Libertyville in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs. Tyler had 140 yards on 28 carries. Sprecher had 97 yards on 24 carries; he added a touchdown on an interception return that gave Pekin a 20-7 lead early in the third quarter.
Seth Glatz, Morton
We're running out of superlatives to describe the senior running back. Glatz ran for a Class 5A playoff record seven touchdowns and 417 yards to lead the Potters to a 56-33 victory in a first-round home game against Highland. Glatz ran for TDs of 85, 64, 64, 55, 16, 7 and 2 yards.
Thomas Borges, Washington
Borges ran the ball 15 consecutive plays during a 10-minute Washington drive that wiped out the first quarter and crossed into the second. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound senior running back finished with 38 carries for 231 yards and the game-winning touchdown, a run across from the 4 to beat Normal West, 14-7 in their Class 6A first-round game.
Layne Kaufman, Morton
The Morton quarterback ran 17 times for 164 yards and a six-yard TD as a perfect complement to Glatz in the 56-33 win over Highland in the Class 5A opening round.. Kaufman also passed for 33 yards.
Brady Clark, Kewanee
The Boilers kicker made a 40-yard field goal with 3.6 seconds remaining to rally Kewanee to a 17-14 victory over Plano in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. Kewanee (9-1) trailed 14-0 half way through the third quarter before getting touchdowns from Will Bruno and Keyontiss Patterson to tie the game with 4:08 remaining.
Shemar Williams, Tremont
The fullback rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries to lift the Turks to past Momence, 19-0, in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. Tremont (8-2) held the visitors to 106 yards of total offense in its first shutout of the season.
Teegan Davis, Princeton
The quarterback accounted for 206 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tigers (9-1) to a 47-14 win over Poplar Grove North Boone (5-5) in a Class 3A first-round game Friday night. Davis ran for 110 yards and two scores on 14 carries. He was 6-for-13 for 96 yards — including and a 48-yard TD pass to Ean Compton to kick off the scoring. Augie Christiansen added 137 rushing yards and a TD on 24 carries for Princeton.
Parker Darst, Abingdon-Avon
The senior defensive back broke up a fourth-down pass in the final minute to propel the top-seeded Tornadoes (9-1) past upset-minded Annawan/Wethersfield 14-8 in a first-round game Friday night.
Brett Denniston, Dee-Mack
The running back ran for 142 yards and a touchdown to lead Deer Creek-Mackinaw (7-3) to a 40-14 win over Chicago North Lawndale in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. EJ Baez and Lucas Blumeyer also had a stellar games, accounting for five combined touchdowns in the playoff win. Baez ran for 61 yards and two scores, adding another through the air. Blumeyer ran for a pair of TDs.
Kevin Shultz, Farmington
The running back rolled up 230 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns as Farmington beat El Paso-Gridley, 42-6 in a Class 2A first-round playoff game. Shultz, who also caught an 11-yard pass, started the scoring a two-yard TD, then added a 60-yard score later in the quarter. The Farmers (10-0) face Tremont (8-2) next Saturday in the second round.
