Lady Panthers rebuke Canton

Metamora pulled out a 46-45 girls basketball victory over Washington Feb. 8.

The victory locked up fourth place in the final Mid-Illini Conference standings for the Redbirds, who gained a regular-season split with the Lady Panthers.

The game was tied at halftime and after three quarters before Metamora eked out a 14-13 margin in the fourth.

Emily Heuermann led visiting Washington with 12 points.

Teammates Brooke Bambrick, Lauren Dwyer and Katie Megyesi chipped in nine points apiece.

The Lady Panthers were seriously hampered by 4-of-13 free-throw shooting.

Erica Phillips tallied a game-high 16 points for the Redbirds.

Washington’s loss was its fifth straight.

The Lady Panthers closed out the regular season with a win Friday on their Senior Night.

Washington finished in fifth place in the Mid-Illini with a 6-8 record, one game ahead of Pekin and one game behind Metamora.

Bambrick led the Lady Panthers to a season sweep of Canton with 18 points.

Megyesi and Heuermann also were in double figures for Washington with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Giants 41-17 combined in the second and fourth periods.

Lauren Lingle’s 11 points topped Canton, which went winless in the conference in 2010-11 after an 18-10 record over the previous two campaigns.

Postseason: The season ended Tuesday for Washington (9-17) after a 38-32 loss to No. 4 seed East Peoria in the Class 3A Washington Regional semifnals.
