Track squad eighth; young group solid

The Washington boys track and field team did not have an individual place in the top six Thursday at the Mid-Illini Conference meet.

The Panthers settled for eighth place at Dunlap’s Eagle Field, but they can feel optimistic about the program’s future the way the younger athletes performed.

Pekin ended Metamora’s five-year run atop the conference by a 128-123 count.

Morton was third with 93 points, followed by Canton, Dunlap, Limestone and East Peoria.

Postseason: Washington is part of the 13-team Class 2A Rock Island Sectional. Action starts at 4 p.m. Friday at the high school facility.

Washington had a stellar effort at the underclass level.

With 100 1/3 points, the Panthers were just six behind frosh/soph champion Metamora.
