First-year program places 11th

State standouts: The Washington Middle School girls cross country team produced an 11th-place finish Oct. 17 at the Illinois Elementary School Association Class A state meet in its inaugural season. On Oct. 17, the Washington Middle School girls cross country team finished off its season by finishing 11th in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class A state meet at Maxwell Park in Normal. 

Panthers Haley Willis and Kristen Slomba ran side-by-side as they blazed through the state course.

Willis finished eighth out of 237 competitors in a school-record time of 12:32. Slomba wound up 13th in 12:35. 

Both girls’ performances earned them a spot on the awards stand. 

Strong performances also came from Taylor Foster, Eleanor Burnette, Claire Hagan, Alysabeth Buck, and Erin O’Brien of WMS as every Panther ran their best time of the season. 

In the boys’ race, Jack Klekamp also ran an impressive race for WMS as he finished 79th out of 233 runners in a time of 12:07.
