Linksters handle test on road

Washington opened its Mid-Illini Conference boys golf season by winning an important match.

The Panthers, the defending champions, derailed Metamora at its home course, 157-161.

Playing the back nine at Snag Creek Golf Course in Washburn Aug. 26, Nick McClellan led the guests with a two-over-par 38.

Sam Norbom and Trevor Underwood also provided sub-40 rounds with 39s for Washington.

David Dalfonso and Austin Worner added 41s to complete the dual win.

The junior-varsity contest also was close with the Panthers ekeing out a 182-184 decision.

WCHS 159, Manual 220: The Panthers drubbed the hapless Rams Aug. 27.

Zach Jacobs led Washington with a medalist-winning one-over 36 on the front nine at Fairlakes Golf Course.

Cory Cooper also posted a nice score for the hosts with his 38.

Ryan Williams notched a 41 and Adam Rankin and Nick Finney both totaled 44s for the Panthers.

WCHS 150, Canton 177: The Panthers earned their second straight Mid-Illini win Thursday by crushing the Little Giants.

Norbom fired an even-par round of 35 on Fairlakes’ front side despite making a double bogey at the par-four ninth hole. He had the low score by three shots.

All of the Washington golfers who contributed were in the 30s as Dalfonso and Worner had 38s and McClellan a 39.

Dunlap, Pekin and East Peoria also completed the first M-I week at 2-0.

Williams’ 36 led the Panther JV to a 157-189 victory over Canton.
