Panthers overtake East Peoria

East Peoria upended the Washington boys tennis team May 6, 7-2.

Devin Norton claimed the lone singles win for the host Panthers in the Mid-Illini Conference matchup.

Norton was a 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 victor from the No. 1 position.

In doubles, the Washington duo of Norton and Derek High prevailed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The league was the Raiders’ second and snapped a three-match losing streak.

Dunlap 8, WCHS 1: The Panthers closed out the M-I regular season May 7 at home with a loss to the Eagles.

Norton came through again in singles for Washington with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over the No. 1 Dunlap netter.

The Panthers finished with a 1-5 dual mark, while the Eagles became one of three 5-1 conference squads.

Each of the other eight pairings ended in two sets in the battle that originally was scheduled for April 8.

Conference: Washington enjoyed a solid day May 9 at Illinois Central College.

The Panthers ended up fifth in the final M-I standings after surpassing East Peoria.

Washington scored six tournament points to edge the Raiders by one.

Combined with regular-year results, the Panthers were narrowly ahead of East Peoria, 5.5-5.

Norton completed a fifth-place No. 1 singles showing with a 6-3, 6-4 win over a Raider.

In No. 2 singles, High rallied for fifth after a first-set defeat, 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Both of the doubles combinations — Marcus Taylor/ Matt Vroman and Craig Hines/Patrick Grillot — were sixth for Washington.

In a three-team showdown, Metamora defended its Mid-Illini championship by outscoring Morton and Dunlap.
