John Williams, 96, of Washington, died at 1:54 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, in the emergency room at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born Oct. 20, 1911, in Hamilton County to Bill and Cordelia Blaylock Williams, he married Mary Louise Faubel in 1932 in Peoria. She died July 7, 1995 in Washington.

Surviving are one daughter, Nancy (Henry) Kemp of Peoria; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He came to Washington from Montana in 1929 by hopping freight trains on the TP & W line, and jumped off in Washington, even though the train did not stop here.

He worked for the city of Washington for more than 35 years prior to his retirement in 1976, during which he ran most of the city maintenance, including water, sewer and street projects.

Services were Tuesday at Glendale Cemetery in Washington. The Rev. Doug Hicks officiated.

Mason-White Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
