WASHINGTON – Earl R. Phegley, 73, died at 7:26 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Morton Villa Care Center.

Born July 13, 1934, in Shelby County to John Henry and Ocla Trout Phegley, he married Margaruette “Ann” Holliman Aug. 30, 1974, in Sunnyland. She died Jan. 27, 2006, in Washington.

Also preceding him in death  were three brothers and one sister.

Surviving are two stepdaughters, Julie Bristol of Washington and Lora (Joe) Horne of Richmond, Kan.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Lennel (Juanita) Phegley of Shelbyville; and four sisters, Genevieve (Roy) Atkins of Nokomis, Vida Hayward, Ruby Prater and his twin sister, Merle (Don) Himes, all of Shelbyville.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.

He worked as a machine operator at Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 30 years before retiring in 1997.

Services will be at 11 a.m.  Thursday at Deiters Funeral Home in Washington. The Rev. Steve Hardin will officiate.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Morton, where military rites will be accorded.

Memorials may be made to the Northern Tazewell Fire & Rescue Squad.
