Early morning party busted
Nineteen Whitney Young High School students were arrested for an early morning party at the Super 8 Hotel in Washington hours after their boys basketball team won a semi-final game at the Illinois Class 4A tournament.
An additional eight Chicago and surrounding area teens were also arrested.
The Whitney Young boys basketball team took the state championship after a the final game, 66-64, against Waukegan High School.
Washington police received a report of an underage drinking party at the hotel at 1884 Washington Road, Deputy Chief Don Volk said.
He added that after receiving the initial complaint, Washington police notified both the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department and the Illinois State Police at about 2:05 a.m.
Volk said there was an ISP task force nearby and they would investigate.
None of the youths arrested are listed on the Whitney Young roster as members of the championship team, and the cited students were reportedly not on a school sanctioned trip.

Michael Cassidy, 17; Justin A. Bartasius, 18; Kenneth K. Julion, 17; Zackery T. Stemley, 17; Anna Orszulak, 17; Kamila M. Zelechowski, 17; Alexander Pables, 18; Peter N. Tamondong, 17; Julian A. Cortez, 19; Jose J. Soto, 17; Andrew Rodriguez, 18; Patrick J. McVeagh, 17; Zachary T. Berglind, 17; Thomas Kulawiak, 18; Anthony M Ziomek, 17; Matthew G. Ziomek, 17; Roberto Martinez Jr., 17; Amanda M. Calo, 19 (all of Chicago); Hector M. Diaz, 18, of Oak Lawn; John Kim, 20, of Morton Grove; and Julian Torres, 17, of Hanover Park.
Four juveniles were also cited for underage drinking.
In addition to being cited for underage drinking, Miguel A. Martinez, 19, of Chicago, was also arrested for possession of a controlled substance and is being held at the Tazewell County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.
One youth provided a false name. Police are currently investigating.
School district officials are considering what punitive measures will be taken.
