Homer binge persists

Stifling the Rockets: Washington sophomore Paige Ely shut out the Limestone softball team, 6-0, May 11 at home. Four Lady Panthers hit home runs.

Paige Ely twirled a two-hitter as the Washington softball team shut out Limestone May 11.

A 6-0 Lady Panther victory at Jan Smith Field avenged an earlier Mid-Illini Conference defeat to the Rockets.

Ely struck out seven and walked two in a complete-game masterpiece.

Dani Frye socked a solo home run, the first of her career, to lead the potent Washington offense.

Allison Thome, Shelby Lickiss and Cassie Reed also launched homers for the Lady Panthers, who doubled their advantage with a three-run sixth inning. Lickiss had two RBI.

Washington played errorless ball, while the Limestone defense was porous.

The result was a sharp contrast to the first meeting in Bartonville when the Rockets scored seven runs.

The Lady Panthers lost Friday to the Ironmen after the visitors rallied from an early 2-0 deficit.

Washington (14-14) received a two-run homer from Lickiss in the second inning to get out in front of the traditional Class 4A power.

Thome, who was 2-for-3, doubled as two of the three Lady Panther hits were good for extra bases.

Ely tossed 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and two walks before giving way to Heather Sweet.

Another attempt: After two postponements, Washington and Pekin will try again at 4:30 p.m. Friday to play their second conference game.
