Motorists traveling from Peoria to Washington via McClugage Bridge will face eastbound lane closure Saturday while road crews continue structural steel repairs.

Saturday’s closure is scheduled between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Motorists will be diverted to the Murray Baker Bridge. Westbound lanes on U.S. Route 150 will not be affected by the closure.

A detour will direct eastbound traffic south on Illinois Route 29 to cross the river via Interstate 74, according to IDOT officials.

However, another option for motorists traveling to East Peoria and Washington is to cross the Bob Michel Bridge from downtown Peoria.

Traffic will continue to be reduced to one eastbound lane between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. the remainder of the week. Westbound lanes will remain open.

Westbound lane closures on McClugage were common last year while crews replaced expansion joints between the bridge’s concrete surface slabs for all three lanes.

Eastbound lanes were closed later in the year while crews welded steel plates over a section of truss below the bridge deck.

According to IDOT’s last count, in 2003, about 40,400 vehicles travel across McClugage Bridge daily.
