Tuesday marks the opening of the new Washington Menard’s Mega Store, 1975 Freedom Parkway across from Wal-Mart.

Before construction began, city administrator Bob Morris said he believed the new Menard’s will be another major sales tax generator for the city.

Morris added that the new Menard’s is by no means the last piece in the enrichment of Washington’s business market.

“We think it’s just a continuation of the city’s commercial growth,” he said.

In June, Russ Waldschmidt, who sold the ground for the project, said he felt Washington was a good fit for Menard’s.

“(Menard’s) bought into the idea that there was a more regional market now,” said Waldschmidt, who previously helped to bring Walgreens Drug Store and Wal-Mart Supercenter into Washington.

Shortly after opening day, a grand opening celebration will be scheduled.

The celebration will include special deals on merchandise, prize give-aways, in-store demonstrations and celebrity appearances.
