City crew works to find, fix water leak

Michael Biggs, with the Washington water/sewer maintenance department, digs mud away from the pipe after city workers were able to find the reason for water collecting and running down a portion of Peoria Street near the corner of Peoria and Bondurant streets.

Workers received calls March 6 stating there was water collecting along the

curb, and a crew set about digging up a small part of Peoria Street near the corner of Peoria and Bondurant streets.

After locating the water main, Michael Biggs got in the hole to find the leak

after the excess water was pumped out.

The leak turned out to be a crack in the pipe. After scraping debris and mud off the pipe,

Biggs sealed the leak with a metal sleeve. Because the hole needed to access the pipe is on a state route (Route 8), the street department must follow Illinois Department of Transportation guidelines in repairing the street.

Street supervisor Craig Cohen said the cement has been poured, and workers will cold patch the remainder today. He said it is still too early in the season to get asphalt to do the overlay.
