CLUBS/GROUPS

WASHINGTON MOMS will have a Welcome to MOMS (getting to know you/spa and pampering day) meeting Sept. 8. On Sept. 22, Jill Savage from Hearts at Home will present "Teach Me to Pray." Meetings are from 9-11 a.m. at Crossroads United Methodist Church on Route 24 and North Main Street in Washington. The will be a huge garage sale Oct. 2-4. MOMS is a non-denominational Christian group with a relaxed meeting atmosphere which encourages and equips area women in their roles as mothers. All mothers regardless of age or ages of their children are welcome. Childcare is provided for a nominal fee while mothers attend the meetings. Meetings are the second and fourth Mondays of each month from September through May. Activities include speakers, craft days and field trips.

EVENTS

NORTHERN TAZEWELL RECREATION ASSOCIATION (NTRA) is having its third annual drawdown on Sept. 6 at Countryside Banquet Facility. A total of 125 tickets will be sold at $50 each.  Doors will open at 5 p.m. with dinner being served at 6 p.m.  Each ticket will get two people in the door for an evening of dinner, drinks and fun. Every ticket number will be placed in a drawing to receive prizes donated from local businesses.  The prizes range in value from $10 to $1,000 for first prize. The NTRA board wants to raise about $5,000 in profit from this event. Proceeds will help to fund the softball, baseball, soccer and basketball programs for NTRA, in addition to maintaining Oliver Thomas Park. Tickets may be purchased from any board member. BETHANY COMMUNITY CHURCH will begin having services Sept. 7 at Five Points Washington. Bethany Community Church is a church plant of Bethany Baptist Church in Peoria. Services will be led by pastor Daniel Bennett and a leadership from Bethany Baptist Church. The schedule for each Sunday morning includes Sunday School for all ages, including adults, from 9-10 a.m. and worship from 10:15-11:30 a.m. Children's Church for children age 3 through third grade will be provided by a team of trained Children's Church leaders. ALPHA Bible Study will be presented at Crossroads United Methodist Church. The study will look at topics such as "Who is Jesus?" and "Does prayer work?" There will be a kick-off celebration and supper from 6-8:30 p.m. Sept. 28. Child care will be provided at no charge. Classes will continue on Thursdays through Nov. 20. A casual supper will be served at 6 p.m. each Thursday, and the program will begin at 6:45 p.m. Each evening ends in small group discussion. A special Holy Spirit Day Away will be Oct. 18. "THE LESTERS" from St. Louis will present a gospel concert at the Evangelical United Methodist Church, 401 Walnut St., at 7 p.m. Sept. 19. The church is located four blocks east of the square. The concert is free. There will be a freewill offering taken. Known as St. Louis' First Family of Gospel Music, this talented group was founded in 1925 by Harvey and Opal Lester and is celebrating more than 80 years of continuous Christian music ministry. The Lesters have achieved major radio success with several songs in the Top 40 Gospel Music Charts. Check out their Web site at www.thelesters.com and make plans now to attend this concert. GRIEFSHARE recovery seminar and support group will begin Sept. 18 at Crossroads United Methodist Church, 1420 N. Main St. The sessions will be from 1-3 p.m. every Thursday for 13 weeks. GriefShare is a video seminar series that features some of the nation's foremost Christian experts on grief and recovery topics as seen from a biblical perspective. Seminar sessions include "The Journey of Grief," "When Your Spouse Dies," "Your Family and Grief," "Why" and "Stuck in Grief." The videos are combined with a support group discussion of the material presented during the video. Although Crossroads sponsors GriefShare, it is ecumenical and people of all denominations are invited to attend. The loss need not be recent. Peggy King and Betty Kruzan will facilitate the group. CROSSROADS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH invites the community to an ecumenical prayer and healing service Sept. 10. The service will include a brief devotion, the sacrament of Holy Communion and prayer and anointing for healing and wholeness. Healing services are every other month at Crossroads.

MID-AMERICAN HHRs and the Sunnyland Church of the Nazarene will present the first annual Cruise for Christ car show and music festival Sept. 27. The event, which is intended to raise awareness of the church and to raise funds for Mid-American HHR club charities, includes a car show with multiple trophy classes, goodie bags, dash plaques and door prizes, with a cruise to Didley's in Metamora. Live music will be provided by the River City Concert Club and other local artists. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Sunnyland Church of the Nazarene, the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Chiari Treatment Center. DIRTY DANCING bus trip to see the stage show of "Dirty Dancing" will be Oct. 12 in Chicago. While keeping with the moments from the film, in theater, Baby and Johnny's relationship is developed further. There is more dancing and more music, in addition to the songs "(I've Had) the Time of My Life," "Hungry Eyes," "Hey Baby" and "Do You Love Me?" The bus will leave from the Washington Park District at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to return at about 9:30 p.m. The bus will make a one-hour dinner stop on the return trip. tickets are $115 for residents and $120 for non-residents. Register at the park district office. Minimum/maximum number of participants is 35/43.

I SPY BIKE RIDE for the whole family will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 20. Registration is required. Teams will be formed to compete as they seek out clues and items to lead the team to victory. Each team will have a leader who will validate the findings of the team. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Cost is $3 for residents, $5 for non-residents.

THE AMAZING RACE, the Washington Park District’s version of the popular reality TV show, will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Washington Park District recreational facility. Register a team of 6 for an evening of challenges, fun, laughter, competition and prizes. This is a great event for church fellowship groups, neighborhood friends or just people who want to compete. Pre registration is required. Transportation for teams of four is required. For adults 18 and older. Fee per team of four is $60. Min number of teams is 7, maximum is 25.

FLICK ‘N FLOAT DIVE-IN MOVIE will be Nov. 15 in the Five Points Washington aquatic center. Participants can bring their floats and enjoy the evening’s showing of “High School Musical 2” on the poolside big screen. Registration will be taken only at the Washington Park District recreational facility or online at   www.washingtonparkdistrict.com.

PUMPKIN CARVING FESTIVAL will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at Wenger Shelter in Washington Park. Enjoy all of the traditional fall festivities, like a hayrack ride, bonfire and the art of pumpkin carving. There will be games for kids and adults. The park district will provide everything except the pumpkin. Bring one pumpkin for each person who wants to carve their own pumpkin.

SPOOKY STORIES IN THE PARK, told by Mike Anderson, will be at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at Wenger Shelter in Washington Park (off of Stratford). This event is for children age 8 and older and adults, and is sponsored by the Washington Park District, Friends of the Washington Library and the Washington District Library.

FOURTEENTH ANNUAL TURKEY TROT will be Nov. 15 on the Washington Recreational Trail behind McDonald’s. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Race begins at 9:45 a.m.

LETTERS FROM SANTA. Santa and is elves are busy at the North Pole preparing for Christmas, but with the help of the Washington Park District, Santa has promised to make time to write letters to boys and girls of any age. A personalized letter signed by Santa will be mailed to your child. Forms will be available Nov. 1 at the Washington Park District office and online at www.washingtonparkdistrict.com.

LIBRARY

JAMES BRADLEY, author of "Flags of Our Fathers," will present "Doing the Impossible" at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Washington District Library. Admission is free. For more info, call Pam Tomka at 444-2241.

FRIENDS OF THE WASHINGTON LIBRARY, will sponsor a fall book sale Oct. 24-29. Both hardbound and paperback books may be donated. Donations of books in good condition may be taken to the library any time. No out-of-date texts or encyclopedias will be accepted.

SCHOOL

WCHS cheerleaders invite the community to join them on the seventh annual 9/11 Memorial Walk at 6 p.m. Sept. 11. The two-mile walk begins at the corner of Hillcrest and Kern Road in Washington. Help show support for our local heroes, as well as those serving overseas. Donation to the police and fire departments will be taken the evening of the walk. HOMECOMING Grand Marshal nomination forms are available for this year's parade. This year's theme is "WCHS: The Greatest Show on Earth!" The WCHS Student Council encourages community members to nominate someone they believe has served both the school and community exceptionally over the years. The forms are available in the Student Services office at the school. Grand Marshal forms are due back in the office Sept. 12. Entry forms for participation in the parade are also available by contacting either Jeff Little at 444-3167, ext. 254, or Melissa Warfield at 444-3167, ext. 247. All organizations wishing to participate in the parade must complete an entry form.

HEART WALK, the American Heart Association's national campaign to help raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke will be Sept. 6 at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie. DIVORCECARE AT GRACE Are you separated or divorced? A new session of the DivorceCare recovery group begins Sept. 18. The group meets from 6:45-8:30 p.m. each Thursday at Grace Church, 1325 E. Jefferson in Morton. Session runs through Dec. 18. There is no fee. Join group at anytime. DVD presentations and group sharing time. Child care is provided upon request. RECOVERY WALKS! 2008, sponsored by the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery at Proctor Hospital and the Proctor Health Care Foundation, will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 27 on the Proctor Hospital campus. The walk benefits the Ameel Rashid Scholarship for treatment of individuals and families affected by addiction. It includes a one-mile or 5K walk. There will be refreshments, exhibits, a silent auction and entertainment provided by Central TIme Zone, Danny Blakey and magician Gordon Snow. A family friendly event, there will be face painting for the kids and Terry Sherbeyn will make balloon creations. The walk will begin at noon. Registration is $15 per person, $10 for children 12 and younger and $40 per family. All participants will receive a T-shirt. Those in recovery may choose to become members of the Honor Guard and receive T-shirts that honor their number of years in recovery. Registration will be accepted up to the day of the event. T-shirts will be available for pick-up from 2-8 p.m. Sept. 25, or the day of the walk, at the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery at Proctor Hospital, 5409 N. Knoxville in Peoria. RECOVERY RIDES!, in conjunction with Recovery Walks!, is in its first year. Motorcycle riders from throughout the Midwest may ride to the walk in support of those in recovery. Riders are encouraged to arrive by 11:15 a.m. to participate in the walk. They will receive commemorative ride T-shirts. Registration fees are the same as the walk.

EUREKA COMMUNITY HOSPITAL will have healthcare provider CPR class Sept. 11. Heartsaver CPR, for the general public, will be Sept. 18. Both classes will be at Eureka Community Hospital, 101 S. Major St. The four-hour classes begin at 6 p.m. An American Heart Association certificate will be mailed to the participant after completion of the one-evening course. Pre-approval is required for participants younger than 14. Pre-registration is required, and there is a $25 fee to help cover expenses.
