CANTON NATIVE GRIGSBY NAMED RACE DIRECTOR FOR WOO LATE MODELS
Erik Grigsby was named race director for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series after former Fairbury American Legion Speedway promoter Matt Curl tabbed the Canton native last week. Curl was recently promoted series director for the series.
Grigsby has been a fixture on the local dirt track scene for years in various capacities. Grigsby had his own racing photography business, and then began flagging at area tracks. He was a scorer and race director at Peoria Speedway when Curt Mottaz owned the track and recently had been race director for the UMP Summernationals and Summit Modified Series.
“When I started working in racing I didn’t think I would ever get to this step,” said Grigsby in a press release issued last week. “Working in racing full-time is something many people dream about doing, but only few have the opportunity to do so. To think I have actually accomplished that is pretty neat. Every day I will get to do something that I truly love. I am exciting for the 2018 season and look forward to working with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series.”
Grigsby’s first event as WoO race director will be when the series opens at Screven Speedway in Savannah, Ga., on Feb. 9 and 10 before heading to Volusia Speedway Park for the DIRTCar Nationals Feb. 14-17. The first local appearance for the series will be at Farmer City Raceway for the “Illini 100” on March 23 and 24.
“I was able to see Erik’s experience first-hand as a person and his race directing skills with my former position at Fairbury,” said Curl. “I had known that Erik had been a big part of the World Racing Group family for a long time, and I know that he deserves this opportunity to show what he has built for himself. The race director is a key piece to our team, and we have to have to make our series strong. We have to have each of our positions at the top level. Erik has been through the grind to get where he is today; he’s going to fit really well into our series, and I’m very excited for the opportunity he has to be with us.”
