It was a “killer” weekend for Pekin senior volleyball star Hannah Thompson.
The Bradley recruit rang up the 1,000th kill of her four-year Pekin career Saturday in the Dragons’ opening pool play match against Galesburg in the Quincy Early Bird Invitational.
Pekin (4-2) went on to finish third in the tournament.
Pekin beat Galesburg 25-17, 25-14.
Thompson led the way with a dozen kills. Molly Flannigan had 10 assists, Olivia Theleritis had 10 digs and Anna McGovern had four blocks for Pekin.
The Dragons beat the Quincy junior varsity team 25-11, 25-13 in their next pool match.
Flannigan had 13 assists, Thompson had nine kills and Theleritis had six digs and four aces.
Belleville West handed Pekin its first loss of the tournament and season 25-21, 8-25, 15-11 in the Dragons’ final pool match.
Thompson had 22 kills and 10 digs, and Brooke Sherwood had 13 assists and Maddy Cash had 11 digs for Pekin.
The Quincy varsity team avenged the Quincy JV’s pool play loss to Pekin in the tournament semifinals, beating the Dragons 25-18, 18-25, 15-10.
Thompson had 21 kills and a dozen digs, Sherwood had 19 assists, and Pekin’s Lauren Juergens and Cash each had five blocks.
Pekin earned third place with a 25-15, 25-10 win over Fort Madison (Iowa).
Cash had a dozen digs, Thompson had eight kills, Flannigan and Sherwood each had eight assists and Theleritis had two aces against the Bloodhounds.
Pekin will open the defense of its Mid-Illini Conference championship Tuesday when it travels to Dunlap.
FIFTH PLACE: Pekin finished fifth Saturday in the eight-team Pekin Invitational girls tennis tournament at the John Moss Courts.
Dragons coach Gary Garver said he was impressed with his team’s determination and grit.
“With half of our team playing through illness, injury or both, we did exceptionally well individually and collectively,” he said. “I can hardly wait to see what we can do when we get healthy.”
Batavia won the tournament with 35 points followed by Metamora (27), Bloomington (23), LaSalle-Peru (19), Pekin (18), Peoria Notre Dame (14), East Moline United Township (8) and East Peoria (1).
Pekin’s No. 1 doubles team of Jaclyn Mulvey and Kaitlynn Dunn and No. 2 doubles team of Rachel Bresnahan and Gina Olsen each finished third.
Dragons freshman Amara Howell was fifth at No. 1 singles, Zariah Wherry was fifth at No. 2 singles and Lauraella Everhart was sixth at No. 3 singles.
Morton will visit Pekin on Tuesday for a Mid-Illini Conference match.
SWIMMING START: The Pekin co-op girls swimming and diving team kicked off its season Aug. 26 by finishing second in a triangular meet against visiting Rock Island and Freeport.
Rock Island won with 126 points. Pekin (93) was second and Freeport (88) was third.
Pekin’s Jaidlyn Sellers won the 50 freestyle (:26.09) and was a member of the Dragons’ victorious 200 freestyle relay team (1:51.01) along with Grace Nieukirk, Bella Brakebill and Kelen McDaniels.
McDaniels won the 200 IM (2:18.92) and Pekin’s Claire Whiting won the 100 backstroke (1:04.84).
Next for the Dragons is a meet Thursday against the Washington co-op team at Five Points Washington.
