LASALLE — Business as usual for the Washington wrestling team in Tuesday’s Class 2A dual-team sectional at LaSalle-Peru.
The top-ranked Panthers powered into their second consecutive dual-team state finals by winning eight of the 12 contested matches in a 34-25 victory against New Lenox Lincoln Way-West.
Washington (22-6) faces No. 7 Cahokia (18-2), a 39-30 winner against Mahomet-Seymour, in a 9 a.m. quarterfinal Saturday at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.
Recording pins for the Panthers were Ryder Punke (160), Jacob Warner (182) and Dack Punke (113). Dack Punke’s stick gave Washington a 24-13 lead. Tyler Delaware and Jared Head followed with decisions, then Dylan Thurston’s 14-6 major decision at 132 gave the Panthers a 34-13 lead to seal the victory.
With the win in hand, Washington forfeited the final two weights.
AT LEROY: Olympia reached the state finals for the first time since 2005 with a 51-18 thumping of Beardstown.
The Spartans received pins from Austin Weaver (106), Jake Short (37 seconds at 120), Caleb Yeazle (152), Bo Bauer (170), Keaton Fogler (220) and T.J. Peters (285).
Fifth-ranked Olympia (28-1) faces No. 1 Dakota (22-8) in a 9 a.m. quarterfinal Saturday.
