Alright, so you may notice that one of the events this week is in Peoria, but it's a celebration of Pekin, at least. Whether you choose to take in a ball game or shop without the burden of tax in Washington, here are five options for your entertainment this weekend:

 

America’s Unclaimed History

What: The last in the Pekin Public Library film series highlighting documentaries that take the United States to task for some of the past ills in its history will show “Who Controls the Land: Bears Ears National Monument and the Fight for Native American Equality”.

Where: Pekin Public Library, Pekin, Ill., 301 S 4th St

When: Friday, Aug. 2, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Cost: Free

Pekin Community Night with the Peoria Chiefs

What: The third annual Pekin Community Night with the Chiefs celebrates Pekin as the home team takes on the Kane County Cougars. In addition to community night, it is also Harry Potter Night at the park, and all of it will be capped off by a fireworks display.

Where: Dozer Park, Peoria, Ill., 730 SW Jefferson Ave.

When: Friday, Aug. 2, 6:35 p.m.

Cost: $10

Make your own pottery

What: Art at the Bodega is offering a beginner wheel throwing class that will teach the basic techniques and methods at their Washington studio. Keep the pieces you make, if you choose.

Where: Art at the Bodega, 2407 Washington Rd., Washington, Ill.

When: Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cost: Finished pieces that you choose to keep are $12

Newsies

What: A performance of the Broadway Musical “Newsies”, a story set in 1899 New York City about a newsboy’s quest to stand up to unfair distribution prices and fight for what’s right.

Where: Eastlight Theatre, 1401 E. Washington St., East Peoria, Ill.

When: Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3, 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Cost: $15 to $20 

No Tax Saturday

What: 12 Washington businesses are offering to pay your sales tax this weekend. According to an Instagram post spread across the respective pages of the shops, the annual “No Tax Saturday” is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3.
