UnityPoint Health — Pekin East is starting a new monthly health education series called Doc Talk to foster community awareness of common health concerns.
“It’s a lecture series revolving around a variety of medical topics,” said Dr. Mike Honan, UnityPoint Health — Pekin East medical director. “Our goal is to increase the community’s access to health education and raise awareness for the services we offer. We’re committed to providing Pekin with convenient and high-quality care.”
Honan, the lead organizer of the Doc Talk series, will present the first lecture, entitled “Osteoporosis and You,” at 6 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Pekin East main conference room. Pekin East providers will discuss new topics on the third Thursday of each month. Doc Talk is free and open to the public.
“Other presentations might center around a nurse practitioner and a physician in terms of what they actually see,” said Honan. “We could also discuss topics like heart disease, or cholesterol management. The series will hopefully serve as an outreach for the community to learn a little bit more about their health.”
Other possible Doc Talk topics this year include becoming a safe zone for the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning) community, vascular disease and strategies for healthy lives.
Honan has had extensive experience providing health education classes resulting in patient empowerment and advocacy. He has given monthly lunchtime seminars at Pekin’s Miller Senior Center and spoken at various local social and fraternal organizations.
“The new Doc Talk series is an additional resource for our patients and community members to receive knowledgeable information in a casual environment,” Honan said. “There will be time set aside for questions to ensure attendees feel confident they understand the topics at hand.”
Pekin East, 3591 Griffin Ave., is home to clinics providing primary care, pediatrics, radiology, podiatry, and lab services. For more information, call or text Honan at 309-353-6301 or visit unitypoint.org.
