Harold B. “Red” Ramsey, 93, of Pekin, passed away at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at UnityPoint Health – Pekin.
Born Feb. 16, 1923, in Canton to Grover Cleveland and Martha Myrtle Ford Ramsey. He married Bessie M. Fahnders March 21, 1950, in Pekin. She died Sept. 30, 2013, in Pekin.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Harold E. Ramsey on Dec. 30, 2012; one daughter, Cynthia Counterman on March 4, 2016; two brothers; and one sister.
Surviving are two sons, Danny (Sharon) Ramsey of Pekin and Kenneth Ramsey of East Peoria; one daughter, Sheila (Gary) Schumm of Pekin; nine grandchildren, Jeff (Kim) Schumm of La Fayette, Ind., Jillian (Bao LeHuu) Schumm of Orlando, Fla., Janine Schumm of Pekin, Denise Chrestenson of Pekin, Steve (Julie) Ramsey of Houston, Texas, Tracy (Troy) Mott of Normal, Nick (Alexia) Ramsey of Chicago, Angie Grant and Eric Counterman, both of Pekin; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, he served from Feb. 22, 1943, to Dec. 5, 1945.
Harold worked at Standard Brands in Pekin for over 20 years until its closing. He also had worked as a meat cutter at Moran’s Meat Market in downtown Pekin. He later worked at Pekin Hospital in maintenance for 10 years, retiring in 1988.
Harold enjoyed fishing, was an avid reader and was very mechanically inclined. He was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan. In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting. Harold enjoyed being with his family, especially with his grandchildren.
His visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
A graveside funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. The Rev. W. Lloyd Brock will officiate. Military rites will be accorded by the United States Army and the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.
