The FBI is investigating the death this week of an inmate at the Federal Corrections Institution in Pekin, Tazewell County’s coroner said Friday.

Jeff Baldi said his office was notified Tuesday of the death of an inmate, possibly in his 50s, whose identity Baldi did not have available. The coroner’s office was closed Friday.

He could not confirm a report that the death was a suicide. An autopsy was conducted Wednesday under the authority of the FBI, which has assumed supervision of the case, Baldi said.

“There’s still speculation” about the cause of death, he said.

A spokesman for the FBI in its Springfield office said he could not comment on the death until its investigation, including final autopsy results, is completed.

A deputy coroner was led Tuesday to a “camp ground area” of the prison where the inmate’s body had already been prepared for removal from the prison. Baldi said his office was notified of the death about eight hours after it was discovered.
