After being held hostage overnight by a boyfriend who was in possession of an assault rifle, an area woman was able to text a family member that alerted police to her whereabouts.
Aaron L. Martin, 46, of Pekin, was arrested after the incident and is charged with unlawful restraint, aggravated assault, domestic battery and interference with 911.
Tazewell County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday and the victim was able to run to the deputies, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
“It stemmed from an argument the night before,” Tazewell County Deputy Jim Brown said. “We’re still putting it all together. ... She wasn’t able to leave last night or this morning.”
The text to the family member said she was being held hostage by her boyfriend at the residence, 17615 Red Shale Hill Road, Pekin, and the boyfriend had an assault rifle. Brown said there was an assault rifle at the residence and it was registered in Martin’s name.
After a brief standoff, deputies were able to negotiate with Martin to exit the residence without incident.
“We were out there for pretty close to 45 minutes, roughly,” Brown said.
Martin was taken to Pekin Hospital for evaluation and then taken to the Tazewell County Jail where he remains at this time until his court appearance Wednesday or Thursday.
