The Washington boys soccer team held off Bloomington Aug. 24 to win its season opener.

Scotty Alexander’s penalty kick early in the second half was the difference for the Panthers in a 2-1 home victory.

In the first half, the non-conference foes traded goals.

Nick Moore scored the first Washington goal of 2010 on an Alexander assist.

The Purple Raiders answered 11 minutes later.

Panther Nick Garrison was the winning goalkeeper.

Washington remained unbeaten after taking the title Saturday.

In a 9 a.m. opener, the Panthers blanked the host Bulldogs, 2-0.

In the eighth minute, Thomas Alt hit Alexander with a pass that turned into a goal.

Alexander had the game’s other score, midway through the second half, on a penalty kick.

Washington (3-0) again did not allow a goal in a 3-0 afternoon victory over Hoopeston Area that clinched the championship.

Alexander recorded his fourth goal of the young season in the 25th minute to give the Panthers all the offense they needed.

For good measure, the winners added a couple insurance tallies.

Grant Wiseman scored in the 67th minute on a Moore helper.

Travis Wilkin capped the productive weekend with a goal nine minutes later assisted by Alt.

Garrison was the keeper in both contests for Washington.
