Trojans’ long winning streak snapped by Germantown Hills

The Washington Central softball team continued having hot bats as it defeated Bartonville Oak Grove, 10-0 ,in the first game of the night Aug. 16.

Eighth grader Zoe Wetherell was perfect, going 3-for-3 with a single, triple, home run, and two RBI.

Classmate Lexi Carlsten was 2-for-3 with a triple, double, and three RBI for the Trojans.

Nikki Maxheimer also added another triple for Central and two RBI.

Dara Megyesi only allowed one hit and struck out nine batters.

In the second game of the night, Central beat the Bartonville team 18-0 in three innings.

Everyone reached base for the Trojans in the first inning and every batter in the Trojan line-up had at least one RBI.

Top hitters for Central included Ashley Leavitt (2-for-4) and Kate Mauschbaugh (2-for-2). Mauschbaugh and Shelby Lee recorded doubles for the Trojans.

Madi McCoy did not allow a hit while being the ace in the circle. She also struck out 12.

Vs. St. Mary’s, Aug. 21
Central defeated St. Mary’s 15-0 in game 1 and 9-0 in game 2.

In the first game, McCoy, Megyesi and Lee were all perfect at the plate and contributed RBI for the offense.

Carlsten and Mauschbaugh also supplied two hits a piece. Maxheimer, McCoy, Lee, Megyesi and Mauschbaugh each recorded a double.

In game two, Addison Baele was the leading hitter, going 2-for-3 with a double. Also, Megyesi went 1-for-1.

The Trojan pitching duo of McCoy and Megyesi combined for 16 strikeouts and neither allowed a hit to lead the Trojans to two more victories.

Vs. District 50, Aug. 23
Central defeated the District 50 Wildcats 4-1 in the first game.

Leavitt scored two runs for the Trojans after lead-off walks. Carlsten also reached on a base on balls and come around to score.

McCoy got a lead-off double then proceeded to score Central’s fourth run of the game.

Megyesi helped herself out by going 2-3 and catcher Maxheimer collected two RBI on the day. Megyesi struck out seven Wildcats.

In game two, Central got off to a great start by scoring 11 runs in the first inning.

McCoy was the big bat for Central, going 2-3 with a triple and four RBI.

Lee also came up big with a triple and two RBI.

McCoy pitched a perfect game. She struck out 8-of-9 batters in the three innings in a 15-0 final.

Vs. East Peoria, Aug. 24
The Trojans kept up their hot hitting streak to defeat East Peoria 6-3 in a great game.

Central started the first inning with a hit by Rachel Hendrickson. McCoy followed with a triple to score Hendrickson.

In the fourth inning, the Trojans added another run when Mauschbaugh singled and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice.

The bats really came alive in the sixth inning when Central scored three runs. Leavitt reached base on an error, followed by walks by Hendrickson and McCoy. All three scored on wild pitches.

The top hitter for the Trojans was Carlsten, who was 2-for-4 with a double. McCoy was the winning pitcher for Central.

Vs. Germantown Hills, Aug. 25
Central suffered its first loss of the season against a conference opponent.

Central started off strong by scoring two runs in the first inning.

Leavitt led off with a double and Carlsten hit a triple to score Leavitt. Carlsten then came around to score as well.

In the bottom of the fifth, Central gained two more runs when Lee started the offense with a double. Leavitt reached base on an error, followed by a Hendrickson sacrifice. Lee and Leavitt both scored to make the score 4-4.

Germantown Hills did not let any more runs score, but Central gave up five runs in the sixth and seventh innings in a 9-4 loss.

Megyesi suffered her first loss of the season.

Vs. Fieldcrest, Aug. 26
After a tough loss, Central went on the road and absorbed a one-run defeat in a well-played game.

The Trojans got off to another great start, scoring three runs in the first inning.

Leavitt and Hendrickson reached base, then McCoy hit an RBI single. Maxheimer and Wetherell also singled in the first.

Hendrickson reached base again in the second on an error and came to score.

The score was even going into the sixth inning when Central’s offense came alive again.

Maxheimer led the inning off with a walk, followed by Wetherell laying down a sacrifice bunt and reaching base.

Mauschbaugh also sacrificed to move the runners and Megyesi came up big with a two-run single.

Gaining three runs in the sixth, the Trojans fought again in the seventh to add two more insurance runs. McCoy led off with a single, then Carlsten was reached on an error. Wetherell came up big again with an RBI.

In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Central Trojans was leading 9-6 with the bases loaded.

The third batter for Fieldcrest took an outside pitch over the center field fence for a walk-off grand slam.

McCoy suffered the loss for Central after a great pitching performance on the mound.

Central’s overall record now is 16-2 with their last home doubleheader against Delavan, followed by three more regular-season games.
