A slick course from morning rain did not dampen the championship spirit of Peoria area runners at the IHSA state meet at Detweiller Park on the first Saturday in November.
The area made history on the historic course as the Elmwood/Brimfield boys (in Class 1A) and the Dunlap girls (in Class 2A) both captured team titles. The feat marked the first time Peoria area programs won both a boys and girls team state championships in the same year. Throw in an individual state championship from Eureka junior Emma Argo in the 1A girls race for a unprecedented area triple.
Seniors Cooper Hoffmann (17th) and Trevor Dunkel (23rd) lead Elmwood/Brimfield to its eighth state title, as the Trojans clipped defending champs Rockford Christian.
The Dunlap, ranked No. 1 all season, earned their first title and only the second by an area girls team (Notre Dame in 2010) with four all-staters (Campbell Peterson, Ayah Aldadah, Franny Verville, Abby Johnson) to top defending champ Belvidere North. Argo was not among the favorites for the 1A girls title, but she stayed with the leaders and took off in the final half mile to become the Peoria area’s 15th girls champ.
