Pekin girls basketball coach Becky Fulkerson chose her words carefully when talking about her team’s 55-42 loss Friday night to undefeated Canton in a Mid-Illini Conference game.
“Things on the court that were out of our control dictated the game,” Fulkerson said. “Unfortunately, we let those things affect us. But our girls played hard. They rebounded well. We did a good job boxing out.”
Pekin (4-4, 0-2) led host Canton 16-11 after the first quarter and 28-23 at halftime after building a big lead in the second quarter.
The Little Giants (8-0, 2-0) moved in front 41-30 after three quarters, outscoring the Dragons 18-2 in the third, making a trio of triples.
Maddy Cash led Pekin with 11 points, Molly Flannigan had 10 and Tess Cascia had eight.
Jenna Taphorn returned to action for the Dragons after missing several games with a concussion and scored two points in limited action.
“She’s not 100 percent yet,” Fulkerson said about the 5-foot-11 sophomore.
Teri Oaks topped Canton with 11 points.
