BUFFALO GROVE — The Washington doubles team of Sierra Sonnemaker and Erica Shangraw reached the fifth round of the consolation bracket in the Class 1A girls state tennis tournament on Friday before being eliminated.
The other three Journal Star-area entries who had advanced to Day 2 in the tournament all lost in the third round of the consolation bracket.
In their first two matches on Friday, Sonnemaker and Shangraw beat Logan Kauble and Riley Doll of Olney Richland County 6-3, 6-3, and then eliminated Maggie Stopa and Charlie Sartoris of Bloomington Central Catholic with a 3-6, 6-0, 11-9 victory.
In the fifth round, they were sent home by Kasey Jennings and Sonae Shelton of Flora after a 6-1, 6-4 decision.
Morton's Laynie Laktas and Ashley Mohr lost in the third round in the doubles consolation bracket 6-3, 6-2, to Kirsten Plocher and Kate Feldmann of Highland.
In the singles third-round consolation matches, Dunlap freshman Taylor Disharoon lost to Grace Horky of Lemont 6-1, 6-2, and Notre Dame junior Maria Coulter was eliminated by Dunlap Sectional champ Lily Schoeck of Rock Island Alleman 6-2, 6-0.
