BUFFALO GROVE — Two Journal Star-area singles players and two doubles teams advanced to the second day of the girls Class 1A state tennis state tournament on Thursday.
Dunlap freshman Taylor Disharoon and Notre Dame junior Maria Coulter both went 2-1 to stay alive in the singles consolation bracket.
Morton's Laynie Laktas and Ashley Mohr and Washington's Sierra Sonnemaker and Erica Shangraw also went 2-1 to remain in the doubles consolation competition.
Disharoon won her opening match 6-2, 6-0 over Erin Wright of Urbana, before dropping a 6-0, 6-0 decision to 5-8 seed Jennifer Lewis of Chicago University.
In the consolation bracket, Disharoon eliminated Macomb junior Ericka Dawson 6-2, 6-0. Dawson lost in the first round, but had advanced in the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mia Walter of Highland.
Coulter won her first-round match 6-2, 6-2 over Alane Bratt of Dixon, but then lost to 3-4 seed Kelsey Neville of Antioch 6-0, 6-0.
She advanced to Friday's third round in the consolation bracket with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Schacht Noelle of Champaign St. Thomas More.
Sonnemaker and Shangraw easily advanced past Bri Williams and Shaling Reynolds of Rochester 6-1, 6-0, in the first round. They were sent to the consolation bracket after a 6-0, 6-4 loss to 5-8 doubles seeds Olivia Melichar and Mary Nester of Belleville Althoff Catholic.
The Washington duo then beat Anna Carlson and Erin McMullen of Maple Park Kaneland 6-4, 6-3 to advance to Round 3.
Laktas and Mohr lost a tough 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 first-round decision to Sydney Zumbahlen and Lesley Woods of Newton. But they rebounded with consolation-round wins over Haley Plach and Ingrid Napiorkowski of Maple Park Kaneland 6-3, 6-0 and Elaina Vanderflught and Nicole Szidik of Marion 6-4, 6-4.
Crystal Cobler of Morton and the doubles teams of Katie San Jose/Livy Sutton of Dunlap, Grace Couri/Sydnee O'Donnell of Notre Dame, and Maddy Freeman/Michelle Windy of LaSalle-Peru all were eliminated after losing their first two matches.
