NORMAL — Morton and Washington will once again be represented at the girls Class 1A state tennis tournament next weekend in the Chicago area.
Morton senior Crystal Cobler advanced to state for the third year in a row, after a third-place finish in singles. Cobler lost her semifinal match to Amaya Fernandes of Normal U-High by a 6-0, 6-2 score, but moved on when Bloomington Central Catholic's Clare Wieland retired after an injury in the third-place match. Cobler led 1-0 in the first set at the time.
In an all Mid-Illini battle, the Washington duo of Sierra Sonnemaker and Erica Shangraw defeated two-time Mid-Illini champs Laynie Laktas and Ashley Mohr 6-3, 6-2 in the third-place match.
The top four in singles and doubles move on to next week's state tournament.
Host Normal U-High captured the team title, earning the top two spots in singles and a second-place double finish.
AT NORMAL COMMUNITY: Neither Pekin nor Peoria High advance anyone to state in this 10-team Class 2A sectional won by the hosts.
