Pekin’s Paige Arseneau ended her girls track and field season on a high note Monday.
The sophomore distance ace finished second in the 3200 in 11:57.94 at the Journal Star/CEFCU Honor Roll meet on a cold, rainy day at EastSide Centre in East Peoria.
Bureau Valley’s Haley Weidner won the race in 11:47.60.
Rock Island beat Pekin 5-0 Tuesday in the Class 4A Rock Island Regional softball semifinals. No other game details were available at press time.
• Deer Creek-Mackinaw pitcher J.D. Deany struck out 12 while throwing a shutout Monday in the Chiefs’ 8-0 victory over Elmwood-Brimfield in the championship game of the Class 2A Annawan Regional baseball tournament.
• Caleb Scott gave Deany all the offensive support he needed with a home run, double and three RBIs.
• Tremont leadoff batter extraordinaire Tucker Runyon scored three runs and had two hits in the Turks’ 7-3 win Monday over Farmer City Blue Ridge in the championship game of the Class 1A Tremont Regional baseball tournament.
• Logan Pflederer also had a big day at the plate for Tremont. He had a triple and two RBIs in the game called after five innings because of rain.
Back to the future?
The Illini Bluffs softball team has advanced to a Class 1A sectional tournament the Tigers (13-6) are hosting this week.
IB’s last sectional title came in 2013. The Tigers went on to advance to the state finals that year and they finished fourth.
HEADLINE: Six years later
When the Pekin girls soccer team beat East Moline United Township 3-1 last week in the semifinals of the Class 3A Moline Regional, it was the first regional win recorded by the Lady Dragons since 2011.
Bushong is best
Bradley University sophomore Drake Bushong from Pekin was named a First Team Missouri Valley Conference Golf Scholar-Athlete in his first year of eligibility for the award.
Criteria for the honor are a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average, at least sophomore standing academically and athletically, and participation in no less than 50 percent of a team’s rounds or the MVP Championship.
Bushong was Bradley’s top finisher in three tournaments this year, including placing 14th at the MVC Championship.
He had a team-best 10 top-20 finishes, fired a career-low 68 at the Hoosier Invitational, and he enters his junior year with the lowest career stroke average (73.49) in team history.
Ace at Lick Creek
Eric Loftus scored a hole-in-one on the 188-yard par-3 15th hole at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin. Loftus used a 5-iron for his perfect shot.
