TAYLOR RIDGE — Elmwood hurler Jackson Harkness easily won the shot put and discus at the Class 1A Taylor Ridge Sectional on Thursday at Rockridge High.
Harkness qualifed for next week's state meet with a 52-foot, 8-inch heave in the shot put and went 157-11 in the discus. He won the shot by almost 5 feet and threw the plate almost 28 feet farther than anyone.
Princeville's Scott Snedden placed second in the 200-meter dash in 23.15 seconds to earn a ticket to run on the big blue track at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Chandler Diehl of West Central ran :23.14.
Elmwood's Cooper Hoffman was victorious in the 800 by five hundredths of a second in 2:03.13 and he qualified for state in the 1600 when he finished second in 4:34.83. Mercer County's Ethan Morrow won in 4:33.47. Peoria Christian's Lee John (4:35.62) and Farmington's Jonah Cecil (4:37.61) also bettered the qualifying standard.
Elmwood's Trevor Dunkel won the 3200 in 10:07.81.
Farmington's Anderson Judd was second in the 110 hurdles in :16.18. Aledo Mercer County's Mike Neeld ran :15.60.
In the 300 hurdles, Elmwood's Hayden Golemon won in :39.67. Judd was second in :39.81.
In the relays, Wethersfield won the 4x400 in 3:29.01 and Elmwood won the 4x800 in 8:21.04.
Peoria Christian's David Pierce was second in the high jump after he cleared 6 feet, 1 inch. Orion's Dawson Schulenberg won with a 6-3 leap. Pierce was also runner-up in the triple jump at 40-1/2. Galva's Peyton Sopiars won at 40-1 1/2.
PCS's Thomas McGinnis won the pole vault at 13-5. Wethersfield's Riley Tuthill (12-11) was second.
Ben Buresh of Wethersfield won the 400 in :50.36 and was first in the long jump at 21-6 3/4.
