The Washington girls cross country team is beating last year’s pace, a good sign after a breakthrough 2009.
“We’re excited. We’re already ahead of where we were last year,” Lady Panther head coach Troy Walcott said.
With hopes high for this season, the Washington girls tennis team, coached by Jim Witt, has already been hard at work.
An excellent season last fall (14-2) sets up the girls for what they hope is an equally successful year.

While three-time defending league champion Metamora lost a handful of key seniors and franchise player Shannon McGlaughlin also graduated for ’09 runner-up Morton, the Lady Panthers are loaded with returnees from a 19-win team.
Five starters, one of which is in a new position, are back from a Washington squad that placed fourth with an 8-6 M-I mark last fall.
A revitalized Central still was no match for the Washington football team Friday.
The Panthers surpassed 200 yards through the air and on the ground in a 35-16 season-opening victory over the Lions at Peoria Stadium.
“For the first game, some great things came out of the win,” WCHS head coach Darrell Crouch said. “The defense played exceptionally well.”
While Washington’s first-team defenders were in the game, Central produced negative yardage.

Despite the loss of a franchise player and a solid supporting cast, the Washington boys soccer team is not lowering expectations in 2010.
“I feel we have what it takes to compete again, not only in the conference, but in the area,” WCHS head coach Jeff Brooks said.
The Panthers were 13-6-3 last season, the program’s most wins since ’00, and finished third in the Mid-Illini with a 7-3-2 mark.
The Central softball team continued its winning season with two great games in a doubleheader sweep against Normal Kingsley Aug. 9.
Washington was in the upper half of the boys golf field gathered Saturday at the Quincy Invitational.
The Washington football team is anxious to pursue a third consecutive season with double-digit victories.
After back-to-back state quarterfinal appearances, another deep postseason advancement also is high on the list of priorities.
And there is a Mid-Illini Conference championship to defend after the Panthers ended rival Metamora’s five-year title run in 2009.
Needless to say, Washington again is aspiring for greatness under sixth-year head coach Darrell Crouch.
