Those of us who work and volunteer for the WHIP food pantry have been overwhelmed with the generosity of the Washington community. During November and December, donations of food and money were constant. We know that churches, schools, Scout troops and other community groups worked for us. We received $7,000 from the Washington United Way, which is about 15-20 percent of our total costs for the year.
We were blessed by the Washington High School Key Club and their sponsors, Becky Drum and Beth Cassulo, and their families, who also helped. During December, they collected money and food and passed out 60 boxes of food for Christmas, plus lots of extra canned goods for the pantry. During the year, the high school Leadership Challenge group, along with their sponsor, Mike Sluder, help us move the food we buy from Kroger to the pantry.
Again, thanks to all of you. Every sack and every dollar is appreciated so much. The WHIP food pantry is well-named: Washington Helps Its People. We are open each month on the first and third Wednesday mornings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Remember we are working all year long. Donations may be sent to WHIP, c/o Ken Koch, 934 Birchwood Drive, Washington, IL 61571. Any questions, call Ken at 444-4692, or Jackie at 444-2630
