Two hundred residents of all ages participated in Saturday’s Take Pride in Washington Clean-Up Day. At Monday’s city council meeting Mayor Gary Manier said he wanted to praise all those residents who participated. He added he also wanted to thank everyone who helped put the event together, including city administrator Bob Morris for “strategically finding the places with the most garbage.” Manier added that although he is disappointed more adults did not participate, he was happy to see a lot of scouts and members of the Washington Community High School Key Club.

Take Pride in Washington would like to thank the Washington community for its outstanding effort in cleaning up Washington Saturday.

Two hundred persons: children, teens, adults and senior citizens donned orange shirts and gloves and filled orange bags with litter.

The bright orange bags were picked up for disposal by Washington Park District employees and Dan Wissel.

Washington auxiliary police officers provided safe passage for areas where there was traffic.

Youth groups included Cub Scouts Pack 73, Boy Scout Troop 163, Lincoln Grade School Brownie Troop and Girls Scouts, Grace Bible Church Youth Group and 30 students from the Washington Community High School Key Club and track team.

Adult organizations participating included the Washington Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Crossroads United Methodist Church, and members of the Washington Area Community Center board.

Students from Illinois Central College’s environmental biology class also helped.

Many family groups and individual citizens walked the bike paths, parks and roadsides and picked up trash.

Thanks goes to the merchants who supported the event by donating the T-shirts: Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory, Lindy’s Downtown Market, Fondulac Banking Center, Team Works, Washington Chamber of Commerce, Dan Wissel Trucking & Storage and Uftring-Washington.

Refreshments were provided by the Washington Park District and Ron’s Donuts. A special thank you goes to Illinois Valley Plastics for providing gloves for all participants.

This effort was a collaboration of Washington volunteers, the city of Washington, Washington Park District, Washington Police Department and Washington Chamber of Commerce.

We appreciate the support of the Washington Times-Reporter in publicizing the event.

A special thank you goes to those who organized the event and helped with sign up: Gary Manier, Bob Morris, Pat Brown, Carol Hamilton, Dan Wissel, Tony Berry, Sue Freeberg, Kristin Jacobson, Don Volk, Christie Howell, Candy  and Rick Liggin, Robert Hunsicker and Bill Brunk.

Please put April 17, 2010, on your calendar for next year to Keep Washington Clean!
