Norman E. Birkner, 80, of Washington, died at 9:01 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Riverview Manor Care in East Peoria.
Born April 28, 1929, in Peoria to Edward and Lenora Schwenk Birkner, he married Phyllis Y. Bledsoe July 8, 1956, in Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are three children, Valerie (Ed) Brandon of Morton, Steven (Vicky) Birkner of Washington and Perry (Lynn) Birkner of Simpsonville, S.C.; two brothers, Willard Birkner of Morton and Ed (Juanita) Birkner of Washington; one sister, Isabelle Lyons of East Peoria; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Birkner.
He was an Army veteran who served during the Korean War.
Birkner worked at Caterpillar Inc. for 35 years as a maintenance welder before retiring in 1982.
Services were Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington. Visitation was prior to the service and Thursday at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington.
Burial was in Glendale Cemetery in Washington.
