Irvin L. Nelson, 84, of Washington, Ill., died at 5:38 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2017, at Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

Born on Feb. 19, 1933, in Chicago, to Elbert and Maggie White Nelson, he married Marcella F. Hummel on Dec. 24, 1951, in St. Augustine, Ill.  She survives.

Also surviving are three children, Mark (Cindy) Nelson of LaGrange, Ill., Michelle (Marvin) Homan of East Peoria, Ill., and Margo Nelson of Washington, Ill., four grandchildren, Molly (Cesario) Diaz, Megan Homan, Taylor Pfeifer, and Travis (Kristina) Pfeifer, three great-grandchildren, Jordan, Lydia, and Cesily, and two more expected soon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Michael Nelson, and one sister, Marjorie Calhoun.

He was a proud United States veteran, serving in the Navy and the Marine Corps.

Irvin worked at Caterpillar Tractor Co. where he was the East Peoria medical supervisor for 42 years, retiring in 1995.

He was a Boy Scout Leader and NTRA baseball coach for many years, was a founder and past president of the Mended Hearts Support Group/Peoria Chapter, and was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan.  He also participated in the Greater Peoria Honor Flight in 2016.

Services for Irvin were at 11 a.m. Friday, July 28, at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington.  Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at the funeral home and also a half hour prior to the services on Friday.  A graveside service was at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 28, at Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, Ill.

Memorials may be made to Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, Northern Tazewell Rescue Squad or the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.
