What started as a family focused hobby for Jodi Adams has now turned into more than a job, but her very own business.
Adams will soon open Created Just By Me Pottery and Art Studio, a paint-your-own pottery studio that allows customers complete creative reign as they create their own pottery.
An activity Adams has always enjoyed doing with her daughter and son, she wanted to bring the experience to all families in Washington.
“It’s a fun family oriented hobby, one that Washington needs with the town’s growth,” Adams said.
Created Just By Me will be located on the Square.
Adams started painting pottery a couple of years ago as a “mother-daughter thing” with her 9-year-old daughter.
Her son “begged” to join in, and after some convincing, she dragged her husband into the fun.
Adams loves the paint-your-own experience because it is “so easy to do and you don’t need any artistic background.”
Before starting the business adventure, Adams ran a day care for six years.
Opening her own business has been a “grueling process,” she said.
“There have been quite a few ups and downs,” Adams said. “ It has been a lot of learning what works and what doesn’t.”
She has found the process “challenging,” the hardest part was organizing the studio.
“After the excitement of the first delivery passed, I just stared at all the boxes for a while,” Adams said.
Adam’s targeted opening date is July 26, but will host a sneak preview during the Taste of Washington 6-9 p.m. Tuesday.
Adams wants people to stop in during that time, and for a minimum of $5 they can put their hand stamp on the wall in the store’s party room. All proceeds will benefit the Dax Locke Foundation. Donators will also receive a 10 percent off coupon as a thank you.
Created Just By Me will offer ready-to-be painted pottery, glass fusing and hand-molded clay.
The pottery includes small kid-oriented figures, vases, bowls, mugs, large plates and platters.
An aspect Adams said is unique to Just By Me is glass fusing, which allows customers to create bowls, ornaments, business card holders, and an assortment of jewelry out of real glass they can paint.
The glass will be pre-cut and the process self-explanatory. Adams plans on offering a glass fusing class for customers to learn more about the process and to be able to cut their own glass.

Once open, Adam’s plan for additional classes is to ask what the customers are interested in learning and set classes based on those needs.
Clay molding projects, where customers will be able to mold their own pottery will be reserved for groups and field trips. Adams said the process takes a few more steps and will better suit those using the party room, available for groups such as birthday parties.
The party room in the back of the studio will have a fridge, TV and Wii.
For more information on group reservations, the studio can be reached at 481-5384.
Created Just By Me prices include a pottery piece, studio time and project materials.
The studio will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
Adams said she is excited to get the studio doors open and looks forward to seeing people enjoy themselves.
“I just want this to be a fun place for people to come to,” she said.
