Washington, Ill. -

Washington students will see a calendar change in future years.

During a special meeting, Washington Community High School board of education members voted to submit a calendar waiver for Veterans Day.

Superintendent Dr. Jim Dunnan said that although each school district submits its own calendar waivers, they have all coordinated their calendars for Presidents Day.

Most schools take Lincoln’s birthday off. However because Presidents Day is always on a Monday, Washington schools currently have waivers allowing school to be in session on Lincoln’s birthday.

Instead, school is not in session on Presidents Day.

Because Veterans Day poses the same issue, Dunnan requested approval to submit a calendar waiver for the November holiday.
He said this would allow the school to avoid mid-week days off school.

During those years when Veterans Day is in the middle of the week, school officials can opt to remain in school that day.
Dunnan said when students are in school on Veterans Day, they will receive the Wednesday before Thanksgiving as a vacation day.

Although Dunnan is confident the waiver would be approved in time for this school year, the waiver will not be effective until 2009 when Veterans Day in on a Wednesday.

“This year’s calendar is set,” he said. This year’s Veterans Day is on a Tuesday.
