The Washington Fire Department responded to an early morning fire at 608 N. Main St. in Washington Thursday.

According to the report, residents were working in the attic Wednesday when a hot lamp caused the blown-in insulation to catch fire.
The residents put out the initial fire; however, the insulation continued to smolder and later ignited a second time. Residents reported the fire at 3:16 a.m.

Fire Chief Mike Vaughn said residents were alerted to the fire by snapping and popping noises coming from the attic. “There was a smoke detector, but it did not sound because the smoke was confined to the attic,” he added.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters removed all the insulation as a preventative measure against further smoldering. Firefighters returned to the station at 5:30 a.m.

Vaughn said there were no injuries and estimates the damage to be about $7,500. Members of the Northern Tazewell Fire Department responded as part of the mutual aid system.
