Lisa Barron, a student at Illinois Central College, has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship from Edison International, parent company of independent power producer Midwest Generation, which operates Powerton Generating Station in Pekin.

Barron is the daughter of Michael and Juanita Barron of Washington. Her father, now retired, worked as an equipment operator at Powerton.

She is among six recipients in Illinois of Edison International’s Howard P. Allen scholarships, awarded to students planning to attend a four-year university.

The scholarships recognize and reward children of employees and retirees of Edison International companies.

Barron is majoring in education with the goal of teaching seventh grade language arts and will attend Illinois State University in the fall.
In her two years at Illinois Central College, she has been on the honor roll every semester and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa
Upsilon Mu International Honor Society, the English honor society and Sigma Kappa Delta.

“We are pleased that Midwest Generation, on behalf of Edison International, can help Lisa achieve her goals,” said Powerton Station Director Mike Hanrahan. “We are happy to make this investment in her education and know it will yield positive results.”
Midwest Generation is a subsidiary of Edison Mission Group, which is part of the Edison International family of companies based in Rosemead, Calif.

As an energy company, Midwest Generation is primarily in business to generate electricity to sell wholesale in the open market.

One of six power plants the company operates in Illinois, Powerton has 190 employees and has an electricity-generating capacity of 1,538 megawatts, enough power to meet the average needs of about 1.8 million homes.
