The pressure’s on at the Quincy Invitational boys golf tournament.

Each team sends out five golfers, and all of their scores count toward the team’s score. At most high school golf competitions, the best four of six scores count for a team.

Pekin withstood the pressure Saturday at par-71 Westgate Golf Course. The Dragons placed fifth among 17 teams at the 69th annual Quincy Invitational and two golfers -- Mason Minkel and Cooper Theleritis -- won a medal for a top-20 individual finish.

Pekin coach Jeremy Crouch was pleased.

“The guys were focused in their practice round Friday (at Westgate). They prepared well for Saturday, and it showed,” he said. “You could see it on the course.”

Minkel shot 76 and finished eighth. Theleritis shot 80 and was 19th.

Justin Taphorn (84), Brady Hilst (85) and Ethan Sullivan (92) rounded out Pekin’s lineup. Braden Shane (95) played as an individual.

Taphorn’s 84 may not seem impressive, but it was.

“I’m real proud of Justin,” Crouch said. “He shot a 9 on the par-4 sixth hole in his first hole, but he recovered nicely. Golf is a fun game, but it can be humbling.”

Taphorn’s grit extends to the entire Pekin team, Crouch said.

“They’re grinders,” he said. “If they have a bad round, they want to go hit some range balls or do some chipping and putting. They want to improve.”

Quincy Notre Dame won the Quincy Invitational with 381.

QND was followed by O’Fallon (388), Edwardsville (399), Quincy (406), Pekin (417), Springfield (429), Rock Island (430), Chatham Glenwood and Waterloo (432), Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (434), Jacksonville (438), Collinsville (448), Centralia (451), Belleville East (452), Alton and Lincoln (451) and Quincy Blue (459) in the team standings.

Alex McCulla of QND was the medalist with a 3-under 68.

Pekin will open Mid-Illini Conference competition at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when it plays host to Dunlap at Lick Creek. The Dragons will travel to Pine Lakes on Thursday to meet conference foe Morton at 4 p.m.
