GALESBURG — A Galesburg man died Saturday afternoon after being struck by a train at the North Broad Street crossing. William L. VanWinkle Jr., 40, North Broad Street, was listed as the victim, according to a Galesburg police report.

Galesburg police were alerted at 1:27 p.m. Saturday to a pedestrian being struck at the crossing. They arrived on scene and spoke with the locomotive engineer, Timothy Palmer.

According to the police report, the locomotive was going east when Palmer witnessed a white male run onto the tracks and lay down about 20 feet west of the Broad Street crossing. Palmer blew the horn and the male sat up before the locomotive struck him. The train came to a full stop near the Prairie Street crossing.
