EAST PEORIA — A Peoria institution has successfully made it across the river.

The second location for Lou's Drive-In opened Wednesday at 245 Farmdale Road in East Peoria, according to a post on the Facebook page for the business.

The current owners of the drive-in with a 65-year history in Peoria hadn't planned to expand, they told the Journal Star earlier this month. But a friend suggested Laurie and Tony Halsey look into the shuttered Sonic Drive-In property in East Peoria at the intersection with Washington Street.

“It’s gone fairly quick,” Laurie Halsey said earlier this month about the decision-making process. “I knew if I was going to do it, we’d have to open for the summer, because that’s what Lou’s is.”

Plans are to keep the East Peoria site open all year, though it may close temporarily during the winter months. The menu will be the same as in Peoria.

The original Lou’s, at 4229 N. Knoxville Ave., is to remain in operation on its usual schedule, from April or May to Labor Day weekend.
