PEORIA — Recent social media posts about attempted abductions at Northwoods Mall are unfounded, Peoria police said Sunday night.
The posts began Friday and were "found to be absolutely false," police said in a news release. "After speaking with the original poster on Facebook, it was learned her account had been hacked."
The post claimed a man who was part of a human trafficking ring tried to abduct a woman but was thwarted when she fought back and a police officer came to her aid.
"The account owner denied anything of this nature happening," the release said.
Posts began circulating Saturday and Sunday on Facebook claiming additional abduction attempts at the mall, police said.
"Peoria police have looked into this matter. We have not received any calls of this nature to the dispatch center. We are not investigating any crimes related to attempted abductions from Northwoods Mall."
