1925 - 2018
Walter Earnest, 92, of Pekin, passed away at 8:47 p.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at home.
Born April 2, 1925 in Milford, Neb. to Nicholas and Tillie (Beckler) Earnest, he married Lillian DuPage on Jan. 29, 1949 in Pekin. She died on June 26, 2016 in Peoria.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Caleb Earnest; three brothers, Edgar, Raymond, and Richard; and two sisters, Elsie Eichelberger and Belva Bauer.
Surviving are one son, Kirby (Yvette) Earnest of Pekin; two daughters, Vickie (Tom) Grider of Moss Point, Miss. and Sandra (Leon) Miller of Pekin; eight grandchildren, Joshua (Brianne) Hastings, Jedidiah Hastings, Brian (Michelle) Earnest, Chelsea (Josh) Ganion, Jarrod Earnest, Jerimey (Adriana) Grider, Jasen (Krystal) Grider, and Brian Grider; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Walt served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Guadalcanal.
He retired from Caterpillar, Inc., where he was a wood patternmaker. He served as the business manager for the patternmakers union, which was with the AFL-CIO.
He was a hockey enthusiast. He served as a longtime equipment manager for the Pekin Stars and the Peoria Blades. He then went on to serve for the Peoria Prancers and last for the Peoria Rivermen as a goal judge. Walt also enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and walking.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Chaplain Scot Shelburne will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the funeral. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.
