Wade Bonk has logged 13 felony convictions in Tazewell County. His next, on a drug conspiracy charge involving two other Pekin residents, could come in federal court.
The case filed Thursday in Peoria’s U.S. District Court accuses Bonk, Darcy Kampas and Timothy Wood of conspiring to distribute and possessing with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of meth between last May and mid-September.
It carries a minimum 10-year prison term that could double with a prior drug-related conviction. For Bonk, 39, the longer penalty could come if he’s first convicted in his pending Tazewell County case on a charge of possessing meth with intent to deliver.
His Tazewell case, filed last December, is not related to the federal charge, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Kate Legge.
Kampas, 40, was charged in September in Peoria County with two Class X counts of possessing meth with intent to deliver. That case is connected to a second count in the federal indictment accusing Kampas and Wood, 40, of possessing methamphetamine with intent to deliver, Legge said.
Details of the federal allegations against the three were not provided in the indictment. Legge said the federal charges stem from an investigation by Pekin police.
Bonk has logged 40 felony and misdemeanor convictions in Tazewell, producing nearly 26 years in combined prison terms that have been reduced by half with paroles.
He focused intensely on the two-page indictment he read for the first time in his court appearance as U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan Hawley told him his conspiracy charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. He must serve at least 85 percent of his federal sentence if convicted.
Police arrested Bonk on Sept. 14, about two months after he failed to appear in court while free on bond in his Tazewell County drug case.
His prior felonies include restraining and threatening his girlfriend with a knife and a hate crime for punching an African-American man in a tavern. He also was questioned but not charge in connection with two murders.
