EAST PEORIA — East Peoria Public Works Department Water Operator Lynn White and Waste Water Operator Clint Williams explained how the city’s water and sewer system works during a field trip Oct. 7 attended by members of the Bolin Builders FIRST Lego League extracurricular club.

The Bolin Builders is a team of seven fifth-graders from Bolin School, coached by teacher Marti Bierdeman, and are participating in a world-wide competition Dec. 9 at Bradley University, sponsored by Lego.

The team must research this year’s competition topic which is water, identify a problem or issue and devise a solution or invention. In addition they will build a Lego robot and participate in a game designed to put the robot through different tasks related to the topic, including turning on a water faucet and flushing a toilet. The team will be judged on its research presentation as well as the game. During the Public Works field trip, also attended by parent coaches John and Ali Kahl, the team learned how Public Works runs its daily operations and gave them information to succeed with their project.

Also assisting with the field trip were Water Operator Jon Cowell and Water Operations Foreman Dan Bridgewater. (FIRST is an acronym for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.)
