PEORIA — The Salvation Army will begin its Christmas assistance sign-ups next week at its Corps Community Center, 2903 W. Nebraska Ave.
Sign-ups for assistance will be scheduled from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Nov. 6 through Nov. 9 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10.
A similar one-week sign-up will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 4-8 — also at the Corps Community Center.
“This is a departure from what we have done in the past, so we want to make sure that everyone gets the changes in our sign-up procedure,” said Thomas Fulop, social services director for the Salvation Army
Rich Draeger, the Salvation Army's development director, said that, while fewer days are being set aside for people to sign up, daily hours are longer. "We used to start taking sign-ups throughout November right into December." he said.
"It doesn't matter if you sign up on the first day or the last, you get the same goods," said Draeger, noting that all sign-ups will be done through the two weeks set aside.
Sign-ups will be for Coats for Kids, food baskets or the Toy Shop. Parents or guardians must bring a photo ID, a birth certificate or medical card showing children’s birth dates and a piece of mail with a current address to sign up.
If you miss these times, you can request a food basket by writing to the Journal Star, One News Plaza, Peoria, IL 61643. For more information, contact Lisa Alexander, 655-7272.
