ProHealth Medical Group OB/GYN’s Dr. Arie Shaw will be leaving the practice on Dec. 31 to be closer to family, according to Laura Locke, UnityPoint Health senior media relations.
Patients are being notified of the closure of the practice. The office, located in the UnityPoint Health-Pekin building at 600 S. 13th St., will remain open for several weeks to assist patients and answer questions, provide free patient medical records and help patients find continuing care.
“We are committed to delivering the best care available to our patients in Pekin,” said Debbie Simon, UnityPoint Health Pekin president and CEO. “We are working though this transition to determine what obstetrics and gynecology needs they have and how we can meet those needs in partnership with other OB/GYN doctors in the community.”
Shaw is the only physician in the practice. She has two staff members there with her. One of those employees has already accepted a position in a different department of ProHealth. UnityPoint, the parent company of ProHealth, is working to relocate the other staff member within UnityPoint Health, said Locke.
Patients are being referred to Dr. Lesley Brinkman, an independent OB/GYN in Pekin; OB/GYN Douglas Harrington in Pekin and Certified Nurse Midwife Mary Tisdale at Heartland Health Services in Pekin, said Locke.
Shaw is meeting personally with all of the expectant mothers in her care to discuss the options open to them, said Locke.
This is the second OB/GYN to leave Pekin. The contract of Dr. Eric Reinertson of Pekin Hospital’s Premier OB/GYN was not renewed in March 2016 and the office was closed in April. ProHealth Medical Group OB/GYN opened later that year.
Locke said Shaw is leaving to be closer to her family, not because of contract issues.
Shaw came to Pekin fresh out of residency at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.
